Banchory – River Dee salmon fishing
A day’s salmon fishing on Deeside. There are several world class fishing beats in and around Banchory on the River Dee. Most of the river is fly fishing only, and at Sea River Hill we can offer a full days guided fishing for all levels. We can provide equipment and instruction where necessary to give you the best chance of catching the elusive Scottish salmon… and if you do… we might even throw in a dram or two!
Further details...Getting here
1 hour 45min drive from St Andrews or a 2 hour 30 min drive from Edinburgh. Heading west off the main road to Aberdeen, you can travel over Cairn O’mount, a fabulous drive through some glorious moorland which in late August and early September will be in its full purple flower. Then drop down to the River Dee, remembering to keep an eye on the road – and not the river!
Activity
We will meet you at your hotel and drive you to the fishing beat where you will meet the beat’s ‘ghillie’ for the day. We’ll then do a bit of a safety briefing, get you kitted out in the right equipment (don’t worry we can provide this) and then head to the water! Depending on ability we can either do a full introduction to spey casting and fly-fishing lesson, or we can give you a refresher on what’s required. Either way, you’ll be swinging flies for Scottish silver salmon before lunchtime.
For non-fishers, Banchory is a stunning place to enjoy some relaxation time. With riverside walks, spots to watch leaping salmon and nearby castles to visit there is plenty to do. Or if your travel companion is fishing, then there isn’t a better place to read a book than next to the fire in one of the famous fishing huts along the River Dee at Banchory.

Visit the queen’s highland residence at Balmoral. It is a short and stunning drive into royal Deeside from Banchory up the River Dee. Driving along the banks of the Dee and into the ancient scots pine forests of royal Deeside is simply magical. There is plenty to stop and look at with riverside walks, pretty historic villages like Ballater and Braemar, stunning Scottish castles and the chance to visit royal residence Balmoral. There is also an opportunity to explore some proper mountains from here, or perhaps another day’s fishing. This is a really special part of Scotland and we’ve paired it up with some stunning traditional accommodation.
Further details...Getting around
Banchory to Braemar is less than an hour’s drive, but you are going to want to spend longer! It’s a pleasure to drive into the heart of Royal Deeside and the eastern side of the Cairngorm mountains.
